Differences between there, their, and they're

Even amongst native speakers of the English language there is often confusion when the following form of the word is acceptable: there, their, or they're. Once you learn the meaning of each word it is much easier to distinguish which one to choose from.

There - This form is used when referring to location. An example sentence is: I traveled to the United States from there. In this case there would be referring to where you came from.  It can also be used with the verb BE (is, am, we, are, was, were) and it is used to indicate the existence of something or to mention something for the first time. Another example sentence is: There were twenty students on the class trip.

Their - This form is used to indicate possession. An example is: The students lost their plane tickets.

A good hint to distinguish the two forms apart is say that there is an "i" in "their", symbolizing possession.

They’re -The other form sounds like the previous two but has a different meaning. They're is a contraction word that combines the words "they" and "are". You use this form as if you are saying they are. An example is: They're lost on their way to the bus station.

I hope this helps clarify the differences between the three words!
